Illegal fly-tipping continues to be a significant issue across the UK, impacting businesses, landowners, and local authorities. However, proactive security measures are proving effective in deterring offenders. In Test Valley, covert surveillance has played a pivotal role in catching fly-tippers, leading to dozens of prosecutions and a significant 40% reduction in incidents over the past year.

One Million Fly-Tipping Cases in the UK and Growing!

Despite this local success, the broader problem persists. Figures from Defra reveal over a million fly-tipping cases on public land across England in the past year, with over 100,000 occurring in the South East alone. Hampshire, in particular, has seen an increase of nearly 10% in illegal dumping, with Portsmouth experiencing a 45% surge and Southampton reporting nearly 11,000 incidents.

The Cost of Fly-Tipping to Businesses and Landowners

The Country Land & Business Association (CLA) recently surveyed its members and found that:

  • 90% of rural business owners and farmers had been victims of fly-tipping in the past 12 months.
  • Nearly 40% experienced six or more incidents in a year.
  • Over 75% reported significant financial losses due to clean-up costs.

Waste dumped ranges from garden debris to hazardous materials like nitrous oxide canisters, fridges, and mattresses. Organised crime groups are increasingly exploiting rural areas, taking advantage of under-policed regions to operate unchecked.

A Call for Stronger Action

With fly-tipping on the rise, landowners and business owners want stronger deterrents and greater law enforcement. The CLA has urged the government to publish its long-awaited rural crime strategy, highlighting the need for increased police presence and harsher penalties. While authorities work on legislative solutions, businesses must take proactive steps to secure their land and premises.
